The story

"The Spring of Belonogata" is a poem by Petko R. Slaveykov based on a folk legend: the beautiful Gergana refuses the vizier's riches because she loves Nikola. But the masons building a fountain measure her shadow — and seal it into the stone.

The song is told in Gergana's voice: the bridal wreath withers in her hands, her pulse fades day after day, and Nikola stands by the wall. She wants to tell him "Go. Live!" — but the stone inside her whispers "Don't."

Lyrics

Original Bulgarian lyrics with English translation.

Verse 1

I went early to fetch clear water,

the dew was washing every trace away.

Above me, ancient forests whispered,

the water stirred in my jug at first cockcrow.

He promised me silk and gold,

palaces without winter, an endless summer.

“I want neither your palaces nor your world—

my beloved waits for me here in the night.”

Verse 2

They measured my shadow with a black thread.

A bridal wreath was withering in my hands.

I headed home through the fading day,

but my shadow no longer followed me.

Chorus

They sealed my shadow inside the white stone,

and locked the living flame within it.

Nikola, go while it is still day—

for at night, my voice frightens even me.

Verse 3

My mother was sewing a white dress,

while a wound was opening in my breast.

He held my hand, pale and troubled,

as my pulse faded day after day.

Beneath your fingers, I slowly grew cold,

a dark path awaited me at the threshold.

You whispered softly, “My love, forgive me.”

And below, the water began to whisper.

Chorus

They sealed my shadow inside the white stone,

and locked the living flame within it.

Nikola, go while it is still day—

for at night, my voice frightens even me.

Bridge

Last night you returned to me in the darkness

and stood for a long time, forehead to the wall.

I wanted to say, “Go. Live!”

But the stone inside me whispered, “Don’t.”

Finale

They sealed my shadow inside the white stone,

and locked the living flame within it.

Nikola, save yourself while it is still day—

for at night, my voice frightens even me.
